Finding my voice, I replied. “I. . . think so.” My voice sounded tiny and weak to my own ears.
“You’re in shock. Can you ride?” I nodded. Ray took a step forward, and I recoiled, more out of reflex that real fear at that point.
“Look sweetheart,” he snapped, his patience fading as he looked around nervously. “I know you’re a wolf. I know our girls and you ain’t one of them, and I can smell you a mile away.” Ray took my hand and helped me to my feet, steadying me as I swayed. “I’ll take you home, and I’ll send someone for your bike. But we need to get you out of here.”
I wondered why he was being so nice to me, but decided not to question my lucky break. I rattled off my address and climbed on the back of his bike. With my body pressed flush against his back and the engine humming between my legs, I could almost pretend the dizziness was from shotgunning one too many beers and not a wreck that could have killed me.
The ride passed in a blur. I could smell the sharp spice of Ray’s aftershave and the warm leather of his coat and the musky wild scent that screamed “Bear” in my mind, and, just like flipping a switch, I wanted him. After living a year of being used and abused by every man who wanted a piece of me, I wanted to be the one who did the choosing this time. I wanted to feel a man’s body against mine and take my own pleasure.
This time, it was my turn to be the one doing the riding.
