EXCERPT:
Oh no. Holding the wooden doors open with both hands, he stared in dismay at the empty cupboard. When he reached in and searched around, sure enough, he only came up with two things: half a stack of Saltines that hadn't been put away properly. A few ants scrambled begrudgingly away. Then there was half a jar of Nutella. Grunting grouchily, he grabbed a spoon and finished it off. He had just begun to snack, and somehow in all his excitement this week, he'd managed to run out of all his favorite "bear" foods — the graham crackers, canned salmon, and peanut butter that were his favorites, not to mention lesser things like tuna, marshmallows, and bagels. He'd also forgotten to bring anything home with him from the bakery.
Grumbling and growling under his breath, he threw on a jacket and marched out of his home. There was a little grocery place a few streets down. He only hoped it was still open. He patted his pocket for his wallet, and huffed, glad he'd at least remembered that.
When he got to the grocery store, he stared in dismay. It was lit up inside to discourage thieves, but the parking lot was empty and there was a big, uncompromising CLOSED sign on the door. In the mood he was rapidly getting into — hungry, grouchy, and very "beary," he would probably have broken in if he was in his bear form.
Taking a deep breath, he reminded himself to stay in control, and marched on, trudging till he could reach the next place. At some point, he realized it was going to be a long trip, and while such things didn't tire him, he was hungrier by the minute — already regretting throwing away the stale, ant-nibbled crackers. They'd at least have been something to munch. He could've shoved them in his pockets.
He hailed a cab and directed the driver to the nearest grocery store. The man didn't question the big, gruff, grumpy-looking man in his cab, who needed a shave. He drove fast.
Dane tried to keep his grumbling and growling silent, but he knew a few frustrated huffs escaped him. There really was no excuse to let so much of his grouchy, hungry bear out around a human. If he was honest with himself, he wasn't just hungry, but also desperately stressed about his mate.
Tomas was scared of him, feared him. Tomas didn't know if he liked Dane at all.
They reached the nearest food market. After asking the taxi driver to wait, Dane stalked to the peanut butter aisle, trying not to scowl too horribly. He got several jars of peanut butter, sweeping them into the basket he held, regardless of brand, too annoyed to bother with what he grabbed. Then the Nutella — and something off-brand that was Nutella-like, too — and several jars of honey. Then he snatched some graham crackers off another shelf and stalked towards the checkout.
And got the shock of his life. There stood his mate, making the cash register boop as he scanned groceries languidly for the short, elderly lady with the head scarf who was carefully unloading her things.
