An Unforgettable Love
Marie Nash
When they met he figured they would spend some time together and once his assignment was over he would go his way and she would do the same. It wasn’t working out that way. He didn’t expect things to get serious between them. Over the last few months, he had fallen in love. Something he never anticipated. He couldn’t imagine living the rest of his life without her now.
He planted a bright smile on his face as he knocked on her door. A moment later the door opened and his smile spread wider. Andrea was grinning back at him looking sexy as always. She was wearing a pair of tight jeans with an off-the-shoulder top, showing off her smooth brown shoulders.
“Good timing,” she said pulling him inside and closing the door. “I just got out of the shower. I’m sorry I had to cancel our date but we had an emergency and I couldn’t leave. Did you have dinner? I could fix you something.”
“Don’t worry about me I’m fine. I grabbed something earlier.” What about you?” Andrea warned him when they started seeing each other that there may be times when she would have to work late. Depending on the situation, maybe hours at a time.
“I grabbed a sandwich at the hospital. I’m used to eating on the run. Come sit down.”
Greg sat down and she snuggled close to his side. She so enjoyed being with him. She frowned. He felt a little tense and she looked up at him. “Is something wrong?”
“Depends on how you look at it. I need to discuss something with you.”
She scooted back a little and faced him. “What’s going on? I can feel the tension in your body.”
He reached for her hands and held them as he gathered his thoughts. “I know we haven’t known each other long but I feel as though I’ve known you forever. One thing I am clear about is how I feel about you. I love you, Andrea. I want us to continue to see each other after I finished my assignment.”
She looked puzzled. “What assignment? I thought you worked for a pharmaceutical company.”
“I know and I let you believe that. I’m sorry.”
Andrea looked at him strangely. “You lied to me. What exactly do you do?”
Greg swallowed the lump in his throat and answered her question. “I work for the FBI.”
“The FBI?” She eased up off the sofa and put some distance between them. What had she gotten herself into? He looked harmless enough but what did she know? The FBI. And then another thought came to her.
“Am I under investigation? Is it someone in my family? Is that why you pursued me? Why you’ve been sleeping with me under false pretenses? She was stricken. “I can’t believe I’ve been so dumb.” She turned her back to him and blinked back the tears threatening to fall. “I hope you enjoyed making a fool of me. I want you out of my home.”
“I can’t do that. Not until I explain things to you. I am not investigating you or your family. I would never deceive you like that. I didn’t expect to fall for you. I didn’t tell you my true occupation because I’m undercover. And I knew you would have questions if I told you what I did for a living.”
Andrea turned back around. “Of course I would have questions. Is Gregory Douglas your real name?”
“Yes. And what I told you about my family is true.
