Lumpini Park by Michael Hickman
A modern-day romance with lots of adventure, challenges and uncertainty.

Michael ventures off to Thailand to teach for a year. If nothing else, it will get him away from his ten-year marriage to Sybilla, which is on the verge of collapse. Equally, it will distance him from his doubting parents. They all think he isn't cut out for teaching abroad, but they have underestimated his ambition.
However, his one-year teaching stint in Bangkok was not what he had bargained for. In the first few minutes of his day at work, his relationship with his director stumbles. To make matters worse, Michael discovers that his director has meddled with his contract. His first day at work seems strange and dysfunctional. To destress himself from his setbacks, Michael takes up walking and cycling - adventure is high on his agenda, and doesn't he know it? He discovers the enchanting, serene Lumpini Park, a place of tranquillity and peace that becomes his haven.
Sybilla, his wife, suspects that he has adjusted well to his teaching position, and she is determined to spoil things for him. She demands his return at the end of the year, but what she wants and gets are two different things.
Later, he calls in at the apartment where he sojourned the previous year. He discovers that Aom, the receptionist, still works there. She is stunningly beautiful. He attempts to converse with her, but she is reticent. On leaving, she kicks herself for not taking advantage of the moment. Weeks later, he returns, only to find the apartment has ceased trading. He cannot believe it. She was within his grasp. Disillusioned with his life, he decides to stay put in Thailand, believing things cannot get much worse, but that couldn't be further away from the truth.
