Lady Susan Comes Alive by Gillian Hiscott, Jane Austen
The book is a dramatisation of the story Lady Susan by Jane Austen. Lady Susan rides out with Mainwaring, her lover to see the estate of Sir James Martin, and decides to pursue this gentleman on behalf of her daughter, Frederica as an eligible match for her. Frederica is a reluctant party to her plans and resists Sir James when he has decided he is in love with her. Lady Susan's position in the Mainwarings household becomes awkward when Mrs Mainwaring becomes aware of her husband's infatuation. Lady Susan drops Frederica off at school, annoyed that she refuses to marry Sir James Martin, and arrives at Churchill, her brother-in-law's house. She is determinded to erase her reputation as a heartless coquette, and win them over but her sister-in-law Catherine is unconvinced. She is further alarmed when her brother Reginald seems to be falling for her guest. Lady Susan attempts to further her plans to induce Frederica into marrying Sir James. She applies to Reginald de Courcy for help which causes an argument between this gentleman and her mother. Fearing her daughter's new found relationship with her aunt and uncle Lady Susan, attempts to take Frederica to London, but fails. Whilst in London she continues her former relationship with Mr Mainwaring, the effect of which is to destroy this gentleman's marriage. Also available on Audible in three parts, Lisa Druett
