Adelia is an orphan from London who made a promise to herself that she'll never return to the poverty of her youth. She's fleeing the ghosts of her past under a false name, and manages to find herself employment as a maid at Wardon Manor. Michael is the son of the Earl of Wardon, struggling to forget the memories of a war that he entered as a foolhardy boy and left as a broken man. The world of dinner parties and society gossip that he was raised in no longer glitters, but seems to mock his torment. Against his better judgment, he finds himself becoming curiouser and curiouser about the new maid, Mary, who seems to share a kindred spirit.
