It’s December 24 and Clara Bell D’Angelo has until midnight to complete an important assignment. It’s her last chance to succeed, but her two targets aren’t helping her get the job done. Not that she was all that capable to begin with.

Mary C. Carroll faces a holiday alone while working the last shopping day for a greedy boss. Snow and cheery seasonal music doesn’t put her in the mood, but the tall police officer with the arresting smile sets her radar off—until he leaves her shop, and she realizes her cash envelope is missing. Amid the fear and hopelessness of her situation, she heads for isolation at her family’s cabin.

Detective George Baylee is back on patrol for a few days to give his married colleagues the chance to take Christmas off. With the snowfall increasing and most businesses closed, he checks on the only store still open. He picks up some last-minute gifts to keep the pretty clerk engaged, then heads out to complete his shift with Mary still on his mind.
