Chasing A Dream: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Elaine Burkett
Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy meet as children when Elizabeth’s father visits his old friend, George Darcy, in order to use his library for research. The two children develop a special bond during the two weeks of Elizabeth’s stay, enough so that they each remember the other fondly for many years afterward. Despite George Darcy’s efforts to bring about a match between the two of them, Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam do not meet again until ten years later, when Mr. Darcy visits the town of Meryton with his friend Mr. Bingley.

Although Elizabeth recognizes Mr. Darcy immediately, Mr. Darcy does not recognize her, and his insult prevents her from attempting to tell him. Despite her pain, Elizabeth does her best to at least get to know the adult version of her childhood friend. Nothing works out as planned, however, and Elizabeth is hurt over and over, culminating in her decision to completely give up hope.

Circumstances do eventually lead to a happily ever after for the two of them, but the road is not smooth or painless.

This novel contains a side plot where Mary Bennet finds romance and is the first Bennet sister to become engaged.
