A Dangerous Job by Rowan Gracemill
Eveline Bishop is a young woman who has just lost her job as a lawyer’s secretary. To make matters worse, she’s pregnant and unmarried. The entire town will look down on her. She makes it through the pregnancy, but there’s worse to come.

Upon giving birth, she learns that her child’s father has no intentions of leaving her alone. He plans to make a proper woman out of her and marry her. She would normally agree. However, she cannot stand him.

Ezekiel Abbott is running an ad in The Matrimonial Times to find a wife to help out around his home in a small town in Washington territory. He expects very little out of the first few letters and is also a lawyer.

It is his ad that gives Eveline some hope. When she writes to him explaining her situation, she only writes to him. It’s a long shot to only write to one man. She understands this. However, she doesn’t wish to risk her child’s father learning what her plan is to get out of Charleston.

Will Eveline and her child find safety, or are they doomed to live in the shadows for the rest of their lives?
