Upon promoting Rayne, Random gifts her a two-week vacation to visit Sam, during which Trip and Shay slam onto the scene at the Mercer Estate with Sarah. Random has his hands full dealing with the trio, alongside administrative challenges that include a policy change, a new recruit and a sorrowful departure.

Rayne wastes no time getting into a power struggle with Random over the Oklahoma trio as well as the new recruit, Ryan. Pam’s September arrival solidifies Shay’s early-stage sobriety and expedites Trip’s training program under a begrudged Geneva.

The holidays bestow a surprise income boost onto Black and provide Sam the clarity she needs to determine when to return to California.

A second unanticipated departure clears the path for Black to run the second location. He begins searching after the first of the year, and his realtor finds the King Street property. The renovation gets underway in mid-March when Becky has her very first conversation with Black online.

Volume 9 spans the year of events from the summer Random and Sam start communicating to the summer she comes back to California, bringing things back full circle to where they left off in Volume 6.
