Feeling sick and hot, Nessie moved sluggishly from her room and down the top of the stairs. She was dying for something to drink, orange juice or something. She yawned and rubbed her eyes, being quiet so as to not wake her father. She nearly fell down the stairs when the front door opened and startled her. Nessie reeled back, covering her mouth with her hand. Then, she recognized her father’s familiar footfalls and seeing his face in the dim light, she calmed.
She wasn’t calm for long. His hands were coated with red; it was shiny and she could smell iron and sweat. Blood; it was blood. But why would her father…She froze, stifling a scream, her eyes widening. All of the murders, the killings…her father?
“Had to do it.” He was whispering now, muttering as he filled up a bucket with water; she could see the steam rising from it as he shoved his hands in. “Got to make her better; it’s for her,” he whispered and flinched, shrugging his shoulder like he was trying to brush something off himself.
She felt bile rise in her throat. Make her better? How could… God, she was getting better. How? What had he done? Nobody ever explained why his father was arrested and held for hours. Did they know? She slid silently back up the stairs and into the bathroom. She dropped in front of the toilet, retching and coughing as tears dripped down her cheeks. Finally, she stood and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.
What if it was true? What if her father had killed all of them for her to get better? How could that even happen? She rinsed her mouth, stumbled to her bedroom, and crawled into bed, pulling the covers over her head.
