Celia Lyndon, daughter to a traveling merchant, is caught in an untenable position when she and her father arrive at Chillon Castle to market their goods just as a band of marauders launches an assault.

Though the attack is easily put down, the lord of the castle, Nicolas of Savoy, intends to make an example of anyone who would do him harm. He has no way to distinguish marauder from merchant—that is, until Celia steps forward to offer herself in place of one of the men lined up for execution. Intrigued by the brave maiden's proposition, he agrees, only to discover his new prisoner is even more dangerous—not to the walls of his castle, but to the wall surrounding his heart.
