"The message was short and written in an elegant longhand on thick paper. Carl Whitmore stated politely that he had enjoyed their company and asked if they would like to come to his estate during the weekend for a shooting excursion.
“Do you understand what this means?” Mrs Coxe said, and her voice went up several octaves.
“Eh… it is an invitation to spend the weekend at his estate?” Sebastian said, stating the obvious. “Well, we did talk about shooting the other day, and he said that his estate had rather good hunting grounds.”
Mrs Coxe gave him an apologetic look, the kind reserved for feebleminded young children.
“Sebastian, my dear son. Clearly you do not comprehend the situation. This means that the Baron is falling in love with your sister, of course!”
A new outburst of female screams surrounded Sebastian, but he was unaware of the turmoil and only stood there, perfectly still, with the handwritten letter in his hand.
Oh, he thought vaguely. "That was not really according to the plan..."
