Jack turned and sat down in the corner, running a hand through his hair. Not exactly how I thought tonight was going to go, he thought with a nervous smile. Up the stairs, he could hear the rhythmic pounding of her body against the door – which suddenly came to an end in a sickening crunch. Light from upstairs erupted down into the basement, along with a few hundred pieces of what remained of their basement door.

She took the stairway in a single leap, pausing to get her bearings.
