EXCERPT:
Jess stood and waited for Logan to return. “Ok,” she shouted, “you’ve made your point. Let’s go.” She waited for another minute with no sign of Logan and then decided she didn’t feel like playing games, and turned to walk across the park toward her own apartment. Now that she was alone in the park, she wondered if she should just turn back toward the bar. The wind picked up a bit, and she felt cold. After thinking about it, she decided to just head home. As soon as she started walking she heard a howl, a loud, low howl. If it was Logan, he sure sounded convincing. There’s not a wolf within a hundred miles of this city, Jess thought as she picked up her pace. “Logan, if you’re out there, come back.” Jess heard another howl in response, this one louder and wilder than before.
She looked around the darkness but saw nothing. After another howl, she began to half jog, and, as she reached a small clearing in the park, she saw a flash of motion on the horizon. Maybe Logan was playing a trick on her, she thought. He was just some creep who used his good looks to scare lonely women. Then, Jess saw another flash of motion off in the trees. This time, she couldn’t mistake the sight of fur. Maybe he had a dog, she thought, that must be it. She kept on the path and started running a little faster, up ahead, she could see the exit back to the street. If she ran for another minute, she’d be safe.
But instead of running, she stopped. She felt the little hairs on her arms and the back of her neck stand up as she felt the thrill of this complete terror. She couldn’t believe it, but she felt a rush in so many ways that seemed so wrong. Her heart was racing, and she could feel the sweat breaking out on her skin. Her cheeks were flush even though she could almost see her breath in the air. She looked around but couldn’t see anything. She could only imagine the wolf, circling around her, getting more and more excited at the prospect of pouncing on top of her. She felt hyperaware of every inch of her body. She could feel her nipples poking against her bra, and she felt a strange ache from deep inside her core. Was she getting turned on by this?
Then, she heard a rustling of leaves, and a low growl, she watched the wolf running toward her. She let out a scream and turned to run. The scream burned in her throat and rang in her ears, but she had a feeling that no one but Logan could hear her. For some reason, she thought that would only excite him more. Him? Jess thought. Could she really believe that this animal was the man from the bar? She felt a rush of adrenaline as she heard him approaching. She could hear his excited breaths and his growls as he charged hard. She had to stop thinking of the animal as him. “This isn’t Logan,” she whispered to herself.
A moment later, the wolf sprang on top of Jess and sank its teeth into her jacket, dragging her across the wet grass of the park towards the tree line.
