Excerpt:

Paxton smiled as his dark gaze grew more gentle. “Henry, I'd be honored to have you as my mate.”

Henry barely knew what to do with himself. Given the seriousness of the conversation they were having, being told that he was desired as an actual mate was beyond him. He knew how serious this offer was. Nothing in that moment seemed real as Henry trembled.

“I... I'd be honored to be your mate as well,” Henry finally uttered, barely trusting his own voice.

“Geez, you guys are so formal,” Lucas sighed while rolling his eyes.

Paxton scowled at Lucas as Henry gazed down at his lap, blushing away. His heart felt so light in the moment despite the heaviness of the atmosphere around them.

Paxton cleared his throat, then got back down to business.

“If you're going to be training my pack, just remember that I'm still ultimately their alpha. We're working together right now but they're not yours to entirely command.”

“If I'm training them, they'll do as I say,” Lucas retorted.

“You two do know you're talking about your friends, right?” Henry sighed with exasperation. “All this talk about dominating over them, being in control... You make it sound like they're property more than living, breathing beings. Don't you ever take a step back and listen to yourselves?”

It was clear that what Henry had said didn't sit well with the brothers. Lucas in particular looked like he wanted to fight. The fact that he didn't spoke volumes to Henry, though, since it meant he likely saw some truth in the words.

“When we're going into all of this, just remember that we're in it to protect friends,” Henry murmured. “Otherwise, it's too easy to lose sight of everything and sacrifice those you hold dear to reach your goals.”

“Deep,” Lucas muttered in a rare moment of sincerity.

“Very,” Paxton agreed.

Henry steeled his jaw as he looked between the brothers, making sure that his words took root in their minds. He didn't really know where that came from, but he hated the thought of people – werewolves – being talked about as though they were nothing but mindless drones. He needed to remind the alphas of their own humanity to ensure that they wouldn't get too carried away.

Paxton cleared his throat and turned his head back to Lucas. “Okay, let's talk about the battle training.
