The gun was hot and empty and I handed it to Oscar, switching my left hand to the wheel, the absence of crashing metal and gunfire a brief intermission in the carnage of the last four days.

“Vehicles disabled, targets presumed down,” Oscars low voice relayed to our team as he reloaded my piece and put it on the dash between us. “However,” he said, lifting one of my homemade launchers, “the Devil’s in the details...”

I nodded, already turning, tires squealing as I circled past the broken yellow car on its side, the dark car it had rear ended crumpled and still.

Both of them were decoys, full of thugs, ignorant lightweights sent to distract us....

Screw’em.

Oscar lobbed an incendiary between them both, the delayed explosion filling my rearview mirror.

Everybody pays.

They were trying to box us in, drown us in bullets and bodies and hell, it worked. It worked long enough for them to escape. Six trails and the fifth burning behind me.

Dead ends, but they went there screaming.

I drove faster.
