"Where are we going?" I gasped.
"To the top - eighth floor," she called down and I groaned. She waited for me on the sixth floor landing, looking out the window overlooking the hospital grounds. The sky beyond was dark but there were lights in the empty parking lot and of the city in the distance. I stood next to her, breathing heavily.
Her eyes were serene and satisfied as she watched the skyline.
"Looking over your new territory?" The accusation in my voice only made her shrug.
"We are what we have always been, Meghan. Don't pretend your eyes were closed. "
I stared at her, my mouth dry. "How can you be the same person?" She knew what I was asking and she smiled, that sweet smile of hers that twisted my heart.
Her hand brushed my cheek. "I'm a complicated person, you know?" And she kissed me.
God help me, I fell into it. Passionate, but nervous with it. Every logical part of me explaining why this is wrong. Detailing it, line by line. A criminal. A cold blooded killer. A goddamn super villain if I was to be perfectly honest.
If I was a good guy, if I was on the side of justice: How could I love her?
Maybe... maybe because I wasn't.
