“We have reached $100! Do I hear $125? Going once….going twice….”
“Two hundred.”
All of the heads in the bar swiveled around to look at the man in the corner. The older man who had been the highest bidder glared at the stranger.
“Luke, this isn’t your scene. What are you even doing in here?”
The older man was leering as the man at the back stood. As he stepped out of the shadows, the old man backed up a bit, a momentary look of fear passing over his face.
“Oh you know Jeb, every once in a while it is good to check on the rats. It lets you know what kind of shape the town is in.”
The man was tall and very muscular. Luke wasn’t the tallest man in the place, but he was at least a head taller than the old man, and it was obvious from the way his muscles bulged that his work was manual labor.
The stepfather licked his lips.
“We are now at $200. Anyone willing to raise it?”
He eyed the old man, but could tell from the look he was giving Luke that Jeb wasn’t going to bid again.
“Sold for $200!” The step-father could not mask the look of greed in his eyes at the sum. It was far more than he had expected and would more than cover his immediate debts.
Luke stepped forward, pulling his wallet out.
“Give me the keys to the cuffs,” he said looking over at the girl who continued to cry to the side. The step-father hesitated, but soon handed over the keys.
