Everything was perfect in my life. I had just finished my finals and was on a two week break between classes. My dad loved the work I had been doing for him and the company. I knew I was going to make a name for myself one day. Kyle was doing great. We were talking almost every day through email or text messages. It was still the highlight of my days to mess with him. Life was awesome, and nothing was going to bring me down.
At least that was what I thought.
I showed up to see Rosie and have dinner with my dad and his wife. Classes had been keeping me so busy, and I hadn't been around much. When Rosie requested my presence at dinner, there was no way I was going to turn her down.
We had just sat down to eat when my dad's phone rang. He rarely took calls at the table. When he picked up the phone, I decided to go into the kitchen to give him a moment. I heard him say Kyle's name and felt butterflies in my stomach. When I leaned quietly against the door to hear what he was saying, my life changed forever.
Deployed.
Had I really heard him correctly?
I felt sick to my stomach, as so many emotions hit me at once.
It was then that I knew I had to see him.
