Garyn’s heart thudded in his chest and his breathing was uneven. “Why are you here, Maya?”
“They told me that you were here.” Her eyes lit up as he drew closer.
“I know.” Garyn struggled to keep his hands by his side.
“I had to see you.”
“I know.” His whisper carried his words away with the wind and he wasn’t even sure she heard him. But then he caught that look on her face and his heart felt it would break into a million pieces.
She still harbored hope.
The realization washed over him and he turned away from her; he could not bear to watch her humiliation, again.
“I don’t understand.” She had nothing to lose now and was desperate to know the truth. A single tear trailed from her eye and he wanted to wipe it away, to wipe her pain away, but he kept his arms at his side. He would never be that person to her and he wished she would give up on him.
He shook his head. “I can’t.”
She didn’t look away, but stared at him defiantly, daring him to be the first to walk away. Walk away, she dared.
