Trees, Like Candles, Dripping Wax: a short story by Resa Nelson
When Cathy opens the kitchen curtains, she looks outside and wonders why the trees are melting.

She’s scared when she realizes she’s the only one who can see them. The trees look normal to everyone else. Afraid there’s something wrong with her, Cathy keeps the melting trees a secret.

After all, things are bad enough. She’s starting her senior year in high school as the new kid. Cathy wants to make friends but also has to navigate the treacherous waters of high school politics. All the while, everywhere she looks, the trees are melting and Cathy doesn’t know why she’s the only one who can see them. So she begins to draw what she sees.
But will her drawings reveal her secret? Could they jeopardize her chances of getting into college? Or will they lead her to a much-needed ally?
