Annie Buckner has spent her entire life being babied by her father. When suddenly his life ends at the expense of a mysterious disease, Annie is left trying to pick up the pieces of what’s left of her life. She is twenty-one years old, single, uneducated, and completely dependent on her father. Her mother and brothers want absolutely nothing to do with her so in the darkness of the night, Annie slips out of the window and disappears from their lives forever.
Unsure of where she is headed, she wanders her way through the desert with only the moon and the stars in sight. In the distance she sees the silhouette of a horse and cart alone in the desert. When she approaches the horse, there is no one else around. Determining that this horse had been abandoned or forgotten, she climbs up and heads for the next town.
When Annie reaches the old western town called Wiltshire, she quickly befriends a drunkard and a bartender at the local tavern. It’s not long after meeting this strange woman in his bar, that the bartender, James, realizes she has made a huge mistake. She has taken a horse that belongs to the largest gang in the entire state. Suddenly, two members of the Fader Hallow Gang burst through the tavern door demanding for their horse back.
Annie and James flee with the horse, how are they going to get themselves out of such a situation? Stakes run high when James uncovers that there is more to this theft than originally expected. Annie’s carelessness has put them both in grave danger and there is no reasoning with the Fader Hallows.
