Grace Yoder has returned from rumspringa and decided to take her vows and remain within the small Amish community that she’s loved since she was born. Now nineteen years old, she is in love with a shy young man who shares her love of gardening, although she is unsure as to how he feels about her. When her sister makes a fourth in a series of predictions that have so far proved true, Grace must tell her friend and teaching partner so that they can decide how to approach the potential catastrophe .

Even as they work out answers to problems with the crops and take care of their families, Grace wonders whether her heart can take it if he does not share her feelings of love. After all, she knows that he is very shy and has no idea whether he even wants to marry or have children, let alone if he would choose her . With a hard winter approaching and harvest time just around the corner, it is the Amish time for courtship and marriage, or they must wait another year.

“I’m not sure our hard work is going to be of any use,” he said in a mournful voice. “I think God has other plans for it.”

Grace felt a bolt of fear. Her eyes widened and she looked over at her father. “Daett? Will we lose all of our food for the winter?”

Abel is just a few years older than Grace, but he’s already a respected man amongst the community and trusted to care for not only the large neighborhood corps, but also the younger children. He grows close to them and teaches them about many things, eventually taking the lovely Grace as his assistant with the blessing of the community leaders. Knowing that she has already dedicated herself to the Lord and the Amish faith, Abel begins to wonder if she might share his romantic feelings.

When her younger sister mentions a prediction that could mean an extraordinarily difficult winter, he begins to make plans. However, an infestation of extreme proportions threatens not only his farming skills, but also his livelihood, as the food will go far toward preparing their neighborhood for the upcoming winter months. It is up to him and Grace to save the crops.
