Ghost by Sway Jones
She was his best friend's girl. Had been since they were ten years old. That didn't keep him from loving her.

They had been the three musketeers. As much as it pained him to see them together, he wouldn't leave their side for one second for the next eight years.

When they joined the army and she went to college, their lives were irrevocably changed. Could they now survive as a duo with the ghost of their loved one between them?

She didn't think he liked her but tolerated her for his best friend's sake. Now that they were two, could he make her see how he truly felt about her?

Excerpt:

“So what’s got you all sad looking?” Jeff asked, not knowing when to shut up.
“I’m not sad,” Jake denied. Even he didn’t believe himself.
“Is it Tom?”
Jake sighed heavily realizing that the nitwit was going to persist in his questioning. A part of him felt some relief knowing it would be good to talk about his situation. Another bigger part of him knew he couldn’t trust Jeff with what he was going through. At least not the details.
“Someone asked me to do them a favor,” he began slowly. “But I really don’t want to do it.”
“Then don’t.”
Jake shook his head. “It’s not that simple,” he continued. “It was sort of a dying wish.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“Well then you have to do it.”
Jake shook his head again. “I can’t,” he said his voice rasping with some of the agony he was feeling.
“Man if it was your best friend’s dying wish you have to give it a try,” Jeff said solemnly. “It was mighty important to him if he used his last breath on it.”
Jake looked at Jeff intently. Behind his gaze Jeff could see him trying to come to terms with what he had just said. It was the right thing to do, whatever it was.
“You’re right,” Jake finally surrendered. He downed his beer and paid for it. Without another word, he got up and strode out of the bar with purpose.
