An Excerpt She turned her back to him and pulled her hair over her shoulder. “Would you help me with my dress?” she asked. “I can’t get the buttons on this one very easily.”

He was silent long enough that she glanced back at him, wondering if she’d done something wrong. The world outside the tower was full of strange rules, and it was very possible she’d just broken one. He was watching her with an intense expression, one that made her stomach clench and her skin prickle. Heat washed over her and she bit her lower lip.

“I can get it myself, if I try. I—”

“Come here,” he said, his voice low.

With a brilliant smile, she bounded over to him and gave him her back. His fingers brushed the nape of her neck as he started on the buttons, and he took his time undoing them. He lingered in a way she never had, and each brush of his fingertips sent a strange jolt of foreign heat through her.

“Thank you,” she said as he worked, his hands at the small of her back now. “It’s just so much trouble to undo them on my own. I really do appreciate it.”

“Of course,” he replied, sounding strangled.

She turned as she shrugged out of the gown, not at all aware of the fact that most women didn’t disrobe in front of relative strangers. There had never been a reason for her to be modest with Mother, and so she’d never learned modesty.

His eyes swept over her, and the way he watched her made her tremble.
