Louisa Collins, about to turn forty-seven and already a widow for two decades , wants nothing so much as to be a mother. Although nature has said that it is highly unlikely, she knows that there are other ways to be blessed with a family of her own. Her beloved first husband died during the Civil War, and she has never found another husband to take his place.

Hearing of the success of so many others, she decides to take a chance on a mail order bride advertisement that mentions five children. With a ready-made family of her own, she can finally find the happiness she desires. She just hopes that the man will be willing to accept a woman of her age.

“What about me? I could mother five children,” Louisa blurted out and then held her breath, awaiting the reaction from the four women. “I’m forty-six,” she said, neglecting to mention her looming forty-seventh birthday. “What can’t I do that the rest of you can?”

A widower with five small children, Edward Harper has decided that at thirty-nine years old he still has a lot to offer a wife. His farm is successful so far, with cattle doing well and a new addition to the herd. Eventually he’ll have to pay back a bank loan, but it’s not going to be an issue when it comes time to sell cattle. Knowing that his children need a mother to help raise them, he places an ad for a mail order bride and trusts God to send the right woman.

When he meets the mature woman who has not mentioned her age, he knows immediately that this was not what he had intended . She’s just too old to be his wife, and he knows that soon he’ll have to send her back to wherever she came from and hope she finds a different man. However, he soon discovers that there’s more to this woman than meets the eye, and perhaps his initial judgment was made in haste.
