Gwen Chapman, twenty-four and a recent widow, has more to consider than the fact that will not have a home soon. She and her dearly departed husband had planned to raise her orphaned niece as their own child, in addition to the many children of their own that they’d hoped to have eventually. Fate had different plans though, and now beautiful Gwen finds herself facing a life without the man of her dreams. Her in-laws are also making things miserable for the pretty widow, planning to take her home and cast her onto the streets.
At the urging of her pastor, Gwen decides to take her little Delia and head West to answer a mail order bride ad placed by a lonely psychiatrist in Utah. She worries that the relationship will have little love, especially so soon after the death of her husband, but she also knows that she will have nowhere to call home when her husband’s family forces her to move. It’s time for a fresh start, a new change, for her and the little one trusting in her for protection and security.
Gwen noticed when his eyes moved to the side and his face became thoughtful. He’d had an idea, she could tell. She didn’t prompt him to continue, but stayed quiet while he had his thoughts. “You know…” he said finally. “I think I may know of something you can do. Will you stay after services to talk to me?”
“Yes, I can do that…”
Dr. Dean Montgomery is a pioneer in American psychiatry, voraciously reading books then available only in Europe and focusing on the studies of Dr. Sigmund Freud. His research is leading him to helping patients theretofore considered unreachable, usually sent to institutions or sanitariums for lifetime imprisonment. However, the young doctor is lonely, longing to hear a wife’s kind voice and children’s footsteps in his large and spacious home.
When he places the ad for a mail order bride, he has no idea that both of his wishes will be fulfilled at once, and he’s thrilled to discover that the beautiful woman who answered the ad is a kind-hearted aunt who has become a mother to the orphaned child. He sends for her immediately, ready to get to know each other and see where the relationship leads. One of his patients has other plans for young Delia, however, and the doctor must use his wits to protect his new little family.
Will Gwen find love again in the arms of the handsome psychiatrist?
Can Dr. Montgomery find baby Delia before another tragedy strikes his fiancée-to-be?
