Zoe has fought her way back from a nervous breakdown after the drowning death of her toddler and a miscarriage. She begins hearing the voice of her dead son calling her, she slips on marbles left on a stairway and falls down a flight of stairs, but later there are no marbles to be found, her favorite music box, a carousel horse disappears but she still hears the music in the night. Reluctantly she accepts that her husband, Joseph, is trying to drive her into another breakdown. When that fails, he plans murder.

Her childhood friend, Wiley, becomes her ally in a struggle to stay alive. When Joseph, knowing of her fear of water, kidnaps her and takes her on a wild and frightening trip to Machinac Island, she is convinced he is going to drown her and make it appear to have been suicide.

Water continues to be her nemesis, and the conclusion forces Zoe to conquer her fear. She swims for her life.
