WAR and PEACE - The Musical
Helen Ellis
So, what if you found a letter from your husband saying he has left you for the Barbie-doll office receptionist? Shattered by this discovery, Elle Charlwood heads off to the Australian country town of Mirribool, home of her childhood friends, Shelley Devlin, (the town’s doctor), and her twin brother Liam, (the local police sergeant). They offer Elle sanctuary while she tries to glue her life back together. Diverted by her new job as journalist for the district paper, she soon becomes absorbed into life in the country town, where jewelry thieves, bush fires, flooded rivers, crazy celebrities, and other disasters seem to follow her.
However, the three friends are talked into joining the Mirribool Amateur Musical Society, which has been offered a grant for an exciting project. Tolstoy’s War and Peace is to be adapted into a stage musical! Huh? Isn’t this a mite ambitious for a country town? Needless to say the adaptation of War and Peace – the Musical is insignificant in comparison to the war and peace of Elle’s personal life. However, the wacky local characters are anything but boring, especially those involved in the Society’s amateur theatrical productions. And there is always the challenge of her feelings for Liam, not to mention new friendships, love, and the buzz she feels when she lifts her voice in song.
