Tess receives a letter from Susan (the English woman who raised her), asking if she can come for a visit, as she has some things to discuss with Tess.
While visiting, Susan thoroughly enjoys her stay and befriends Tess's father-in-law, Isaiah. However, she soon finds herself falling in love but decides she must leave, as she knows the relationship can't go anywhere because of their differences. Besides, Isaiah hasn't expressed his feelings towards her.
An emergency calls Susan back to Tess's house and there Susan receives some unpleasant news. Susan is saddened and hurt, but stays to help out Tess. While there, a situation arises which brings Isaiah to Susan's aid, but due to a misunderstanding, once again she plans to leave.
