GRANT’S RAINBOW GIRL
By: Sara Lindley

What does a woman do when her widowed father dies in a freak quarry accident and leaves the farm you grew up on to your older brother? Lovena ‘Lovie’ Nelson had no clue.
Her father, who she loved dearly, was dead. Her brother was now owner of the dairy farm she had worked so hard to make prosperous.
It was Lovie that had cooked, cleaned and washed for her father and brother. It was Lovie that milked the cows that made the cheese, sour cream and buttermilk for the people of Dorset, Vermont.
It was Lovie that sewed and knitted for her father and brother.
As years passed her devotion left her a woman no man wanted for a wife. She was twenty-five years old. Much too old and set in her ways.
After her Mother died too soon, she made her decision to take care of family and run a dairy instead of finding a husband. Now she was sure no man would have her. Her brother Charles had made sure of that being the town bully. Her brother was not well looked on to say the least.

But Charles had decided now was the time to marry the girl that had always wanted him since she was a child in pinafores. Rhia Allen was to be his wife and Lovie had to get out of her family home. Charles let her know that he didn’t care where…just go. She was not going to live on HIS farm anymore.
Lovie was scared and felt alone. It was obvious that Charles was not going to honor their father’s last request in his will and take care of her. It was time to quit crying over spilled milk. She had to get serious and come up with a plan and quit letting her bully brother torment her.
So as a last resort, she wrote an ad to become a ‘mail order bride’. There had to be a man out there somewhere to marry her and maybe…love her.

Grant Ferguson had made his choice and left his dysfunctional family to set up his own home in the plains of Kansas. He had worked hard for eight years building a successful homestead and then suffering the death of his younger brother. Now in his loneliness he finally decided he had to get a wife. Since there were no marriageable women around, his best friend at the Mercantile talked him into sending off for a mail order bride.

God knew in his infinite mercy knew that these two people needed each other. So the wheels of fortune started to turn and these two people, Grant Ferguson and Lovie Nelson, met and married.

Lovie and Grant had no idea what horrific trials and wonderful blessings they would face together. Both of them had their share of hurts and heartache. Both had been rejected by family. But their hearts were ready and willing to love and commit to each other. They were both made of tough stuff through suffering and adversity.
So when they made their vows to face life and the Kansas plains together, they both were committed to make it work.
Grant Ferguson was a tall, strong homesteader with a heart as big as the plains of Kansas. Lovie is a Vermont girl and once their minds are made up, they can do anything…God willing.
The minute they met, Lovie knew that with her backbone and devotion she would make her marriage to Grant a success. They would be very happy together.
But as we all know…some neighbors and unexpected new friends just can’t leave newlyweds alone.
