Having been raised in the expectation of an EMP, Dr. Julie Walters had known what was happening within a few seconds of the hospital generators failing to come on. It took her even less time to decide to steal all the medical supplies she could carry. If she could make it to Sandbar, and her family home, she would be safe and ready to face this new world no one could imagine.
While sitting on the deck of an old cabin cruiser, bobbing in San Francisco Bay, Julie's brother, Ron Crain, and his friend, Craig, were planning a day of fishing, when everything stopped. When Larry, a fellow student, joined them, dumbfounded by what was happening, they quickly decided to take this old boat, which still ran, and head up the coast, having no idea what danger they might be facing. With Larry living not that far from the Crain family, Ron knew this would be his best chance of ever getting home. Craig, being from Wisconson, openly grieved over the fact that he would probably never see home again, was ready to go along.
