I was thrilled when he showed up the next morning at breakfast, slouching in that relaxed way of his that seemed so secure, and that I was beginning to think didn't mean he actually was.
I didn't even try to play cool and collected. I walked up to him, grinning, and gave him a fist bump, which he returned easily, with that chill, lazy grin of his. I walked with him through the line, and we sat together to eat. He didn't seem to have much to say. Or maybe he was too hungry to think about talking. He certainly put enough of the food away.
I was content to sit with him quietly and eat my own breakfast. We got a few curious glances, but not many. It felt comfortable eating with him, like neither of us needed to impress the other, like we'd reached an unspoken understanding of being on the same side—the same team, if you will—perhaps by showing our vulnerability to each other more than having actually decided anything.
Maybe just because we were attracted to each other. Either way, it felt pretty damned great. Our friendship was back, baby! And maybe it would become something more.
