And life at the Shield monastery is pretty good: she's training to save the world with a petit, frightening witch, and her relationship with Zach is provoking all kinds of salacious rumors among the Shield's younger occupants, which is pretty amusing, all things considered.

But the Lost are on the rise: Miranda has emerged as a deadly commander able to channel her feral soldiers into horrific chaos. As both the Shield and the Lost race against each other to find the one relic with enough power to stem the growing tide of inevitable death, Cass knows that her chance to enjoy her time with Zach is growing short.

At her core, though, it is not the Shield nor the Lost that frightens Cassandra Jones: instead, she fears the icy knot of anger and rage that threatens to overwhelm her. And she is no longer certain who, or what, she will be if she gives in to her newly-released emotions.
