The Highland Queen by Jamie MacSeaver
Ella Douglas used to be a carefree young lady living for her father's approval and love. She sees her father's adviser Alistair lurking in the shadows. It's primarily a crush, and she becomes shy around him with thoughts that are not exactly pure of heart.

She cringes every time her father goes out into battle fearing the same thing will happen to him that happened to her little brother Shamus. His death and the absence of a mother figure made her cling to her father and Alistair. She will have to rely on Alistair and hide her feelings with the crown of responsibility lying heavily on her head. Many will test her leadership qualities, including a claim that will rock the foundation of her world. Can she handle the strain or will she break into a million pieces unable to function?

Alistair is a man of many different qualities, including love for women in every shape and size. His loyalty is to the Douglas Clan with everything that entails. People don't understand the pain in his eyes and how he grieves for the fallen soldiers under his command. Will Ella be able to heal his heart even if he does perceive a relationship with her to be forbidden?

What if Ella and Alistair eventually develop feelings for one another that are forbidden to see the light of day? She will have her hands full trying to break from tradition by ruling alone with the wise words of her father following her like a dark cloud. Can they live in his shadow? Do they have a chance to find happiness someday, or will fate have other plans for them?
