It isn’t until her grandfather’s accident that Samantha Rosslyn realises that Woodlands, the family-owned brewery, is in deep trouble. Struggling against high excise duty, increased smuggling and an inability to adapt, the simplest solution would be to accept a bid from a Czech company. But when Sam returns to Bourne-on-Sea, she realises she cannot sell her heritage. She throws in her job, determined to change the fortunes of the company.

Instead Sam sells an ancient family title, attracting the interests of a young American historian, and bringing unexpected complications. Meanwhile, her sister becomes involved in the plight of animals kept in battery conditions, her grandfather teams up with wartime comrades to fight off a threat from organised crime, and her best friend is desperately trying to avoid an arranged marriage.
