Henry and Sophie: A Steampunk Romance by Grant Eagar, Lara Wynter
That fool has created a statue of me somehow. She was both mortified and enthralled at the same time. Then the statue winked at her and she put her hands to her mouth and screamed and screamed.
In this 1880 world of steam and gears, Henry David works as a tailor and an inventor, though most of his contraptions are dismal failures. This doesn’t stop Sophie Thomas from bringing English officers to look at his creations, though Henry can’t understand why. He senses she has feelings for him, but it’s hard to know if her love is genuine, or she is merely playing an elaborate game.
Sophie Thomas is a brilliant war spy. Without Henry’s knowledge she uses him to root out enemy agents, but when she is kidnapped, it is Henry who holds the key to her fate.

In the end, Henry must choose between rescuing Sophie or destroying the enemy’s super weapon, thus ending the war.
