Amy Barstow is a struggling actress. She has no family, no money, and no place to live. She manages to eke out a meager living off the small wages she is paid to perform in a nightly New York play. However, the theater is losing money, and though she’s optimistic, she knows it’s only a matter of time before she’s on the streets.

When the doors are closed for good, Amy finds herself in need of a job, and quickly. Desperate to stay off the streets, she answers an ad looking for workers at a theater being started clear across the country in California.

The owner of the theater is young and attractive, but extremely bitter. He is the son of an alcoholic, and a mother who sold herself out on stage. He hates the business and all those in it, but he has to make a living too.

To make matters worse, Amy sees something in him that makes her heart take flight. Unfortunately, he is courting his beautiful but snobbish assistant, though they don’t seem to care much for each other.

Is Amy doomed to a life of solitude or will Joseph realize her true feelings before it’s too late?
