Iona: Abbess Of Beannchor: by Kaitlynn Clarkson
She’s devoted her life to God. But what if His will is different from what she thinks?

Iona loves her position as an Abbess. It’s her calling and her life, and it’s where she feels closest to God.

But there is trouble in the land. The Vikings make repeated raids on the monasteries in the area, damaging, looting, and destroying. Many villagers are killed in the raids, leaving orphaned children with nowhere to go.

Iona gets a call to go to the monastery at Beannchor to care for the orphans that are sheltering in its remains. They have nowhere to go and no one to care for them, and her heart goes out to them.

But it soon becomes apparent that it’s not safe to stay so close to the coast. Iona decides that they must make the difficult journey inland to Dún Lethglaise, away from the Vikings. They set off on foot, going cross-country to avoid the main routes.

On the trail of a horse thief, Olwydd is startled when he comes across a band of women and children in the countryside. When he hears their story, he feels torn between his duty to the King and their need for protection.

Iona convinces him to continue on his mission. But as soon as he has the opportunity, he returns to find Iona and the children, only to discover that they have been taken by the raiders.

Will he be able to save them in time? Will Iona see that God’s will for her life might not be what she thinks?

This short, clean novella is set in Ireland in the days of the great kings; a time when Vikings raided, clans fought and adventure lurked around every corner.
