The Mysteries of Udolpho , is a Gothic romance novel by Ann Radcliffe, first published in 1794.

The novel follows the story of Emily St. Aubert, who suffers misadventures that include the death of her parents, supernatural terrors in a gloomy castle, and machinations of an Italian brigand. Often cited as the archetypal Gothic novel, The Mysteries of Udolpho is Radcliffe’s fourth and most popular novel.
