In the years leading up to the great storm, Kate arrives in Galveston for the first time with her new husband, Ben. It’s a very different world to Baltimore, but in time, she comes to love her new life, and Ben’s family welcomes her into the fold. She and Ben have a happy marriage, and their first child, Douglas, comes along. Just when Kate thinks life can’t get any better, Ben contracts yellow fever and tragically dies, leaving Kate alone with their son. Kate thinks she will never find love again, until a few years later when she crosses paths with the handsome Jonathan down at the docks. They fall wildly in love, and life finally feels complete for Kate. Then the great storm batters Galveston, ripping away everything from her grasp. She stands to lose the second love of her life as Jonathan bravely puts the lives of others before himself.
