Dust Bowl Magic (Carnival of Mysteries)
Z.A. Maxfield

On one of Lucas’s longer workdays, Sophie defies him and goes to a traveling carnival with friends he’s never met. Lucas goes after her to chaperone from a discreet distance but gets into an accident on the midway and wakes up somewhere else.
The year is 1935, and Dr. Sumner Delano—of that Delano family—has been a battle-tested field surgeon, a doctor to the wealthy and powerful, and a volunteer in the slums of New York and coal mines of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Sumner now assists cousins Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt with New Deal humanitarian efforts wherever he’s needed. With death by dust pneumonia claiming the lives of young and old across the Western Plains, finding a lost doctor before the opening of a charity clinic at the epicenter of the disaster seems like a gift from the almighty. In a short time, love between Dr. Delano and Dr. Hamilton takes root on land nature has utterly abandoned. But good things come with a cost. If Lucas remains by Sumner’s side, he’ll never see his daughter or his world again.
Two men born nearly a century apart want to build a life together. Each cherishes the world he knows. Each has earned a place of status within it. Each has family and friends he faces losing.
Carnival magic gives Lucas and Sumner’s romance its start. Can magic make their dreams come true, or is lasting happiness the biggest illusion of all?
