Samuel Pace's consciousness is sent back to the Regency Era where hehad hoped to use his historian's knowledge to become a political player in the era's politics. But instead of arriving in a male body, he finds himself trapped in the form of Charlotte Everist, an orphan of a noble family arriving at the nearly bankrupt estate of the lady's grand uncle. Samuel feels trapped but recognizes his one option to avoid a fate as a governess, a scullery maid or even worse, is to play the role assigned to young ladies of the era and to marry well.

He dedicates himself to mastering the skills of a marriageable young lady - singing, piano, needlepoint and charitable works - and he while he sees this all as a transactional act, he finds his body betraying him as he finds himself being attracted to the well-mannered Jonathan Wainwright. But to his irritation at his body's inclinations, he also finds himself with a deep attraction to the angry, seemingly abusive Lord Witmore.
