Peace's Journey by Christopher Williams
Berlin, 1916
Liesel hurried through the dimly lit corridors of the makeshift hospital, her footsteps echoing against the cold stone walls. The stench of blood and antiseptic hung heavy in the air, a constant reminder of the horrors of war that ravaged the world outside. But Liesel had long grown accustomed to the sights and smells of the infirmary; it was her sanctuary amidst the chaos of battle.
As she entered the ward, Liesel's heart sank at the sight of the wounded soldiers lying in rows of makeshift beds. Some groaned softly in pain, while others lay deathly still, their faces pale and drawn. With practiced efficiency, Liesel set about her duties, checking bandages, administering medication, and offering words of comfort to those in need.
