After years of schooling, Emily Lightner has found her calling as the veterinary intern for White Mountain Wildlife Refuge, home of a federally-protected pack of wolves. Unfortunately, not everyone appreciates her work. Residents of the nearby town of Pinehead are sick of losing livestock to a mysterious cattle mutilator. While the locals blame the wolves, Emily knows cattle mutilations are more of an alien thing, and there’s only one alien that she knows of.

Enki, an Elyrian warrior marooned on Earth, is passing his time by volunteering at the refuge. It keeps him close to the wolves he’s befriended, but more importantly, it brings him closer to Emily. He suspects that she may be part-Elyrian herself, making her the last known female of their race. He also happens to be falling in love with her.
As the two grow closer over the shared mission of uncovering Emily’s ancestry, local attitudes towards the wolves become a real threat. If Emily and Enki want to protect the wolves they’ve grown to love, they’ll have to figure out the attacker’s true identity once and for all…even if they may not like what they find.
