Checkmate, Mr Darcy: A Regency Novel inspired by P&P by Sydney Salier
What might happen if Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy maintained his pride and prejudice, thereby giving his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam, a chance to win the enchanting Elizabeth Bennet when they meet at Hunsford.

The Colonel, who recently inherited a very small estate, does not need an heiress as long as his chosen lady is happy living in the country on a modest income.
Elizabeth seems perfectly suited for him. Yet after requesting permission to call on her, he discovers that Elizabeth is not as poor or lacking in connections as most people think.

The reason is that Mr Bennet made some friends while at university and he maintains contact with a number of them by playing chess by mail. But worried about his wife’s penchant for gossip, he keeps his hobby and the identity of his opponents very private. The only one privy to his secret is Elizabeth who shares his love of the game. But even she does not know that Bennet has been making money from winning at chess.

This situation results in a mostly light-hearted story, interspersed with silliness.
There will be happy endings for the deserving while the undeserving will be checkmated.

Warning to all Darcy and Elizabeth fans. There will not be a HEA for this pair as a couple.
Just a reminder – this story was written simply for fun; any character development was purely accidental.
