She’s got an apprenticeship that keeps her busy, and for a couple of years, she has reasoned that it was her time spent at Sophie’s shop helping sew quilts, clothes, and the like for others that had contributed to her lack of a courtship. However, now she wonders if it’s because she doesn’t make the time for it.
Now that blackberry season has come, Annie is glad to smell the berries and get her mind off the problem.
That is until Derek Black walks into her life. Derek is a smooth-talking Englischer who has been recently baptized into another community.
However, with Derek comes his friend Elijah Schwartz. With Elijah’s head in the clouds concerning who is right for Derek and Derek disagreeing, Annie wonders if she’ll ever have a chance with the man or if she is doomed to shrivel like the blackberries each season.
