Profit of God by Chris Cooper
Profit of God is a story about a group of young friends who set out on a summer-long work program for a local mega church in the northern woodlands of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, and wind up unwittingly discovering the church's true identity as a sinister cult.
Shortly following their arrival for the work program, the narrative centers around a pair of the friends, who stumble on an ancient mystery with which the cult is entangled hidden in the old woods. Soon the two have a captivating, and disruptive encounter with a spiritual entity which guards the secret of the ancient woodland and the fevered pursuit of the ambitious church.
Embarking on a spiritual journey through the murky, and revealing, and raw features of life and the human condition, the main pair are guided along paths of deeper contemplation and puzzling subjects about reality by their unintended companion, all while gaining a deepening affection for one another.
The exposure of the criminal enterprise which lies beneath the mask of piety leads to the spectacularly horrific downfall of the malign organization, leaving the community in shock, and the friends with their lives.
