A Pearl That Is Precious by Elya Goldsun
In 1853 England, twenty-four-year-old Charlotte Montgomery is shocked to learn that her uncle has agreed to marry her off to sixty-three-year-old-Edmund Phillips as part of a business deal. Her parents were tragically killed when she was but ten and she was taken in by her Uncle Richard and Aunt Clara. Now her Uncle Richard is hoping to recoup some of the cost of raising her to save his ailing business.
Charlotte’s desperation to avoid such a fate causes her to devise a plan to immigrate to America to live with another relative. Disguising herself as a boy named Charlie, she stows away on a clipper bound for Baltimore, Maryland. Soon she is caught up in lies and deception which will ultimately hurt those she cares about.
Nathaniel Hunter has been in England for the past several months to settle his late grandfather’s estate. He is now anxious to return to his family’s horse ranch in Virginia. During the voyage to America, he befriends a young lad named Charlie who has a rather mysterious past. He feels God leading him to assist the young man in some way and prays for guidance as to what type of help he might offer.
